The Gospel:The Preexistence of Christ

20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge” . . . (1 Timothy 6:20; ESV)

1) We try to earn our salvation by doing good deeds – Israel tried to obey the Law; we try to obey God.

2) We sin and fall short of the glory of God.

3) The good news is that Jesus died for our sins.

4) Believe and pray “the prayer” and the gift of eternal life is ours today. We will go to heaven when we die.

The FULL Gospel

1) The preexistence of Jesus

2) The incarnation of Jesus

3) The death of Jesus

4) The burial of Jesus

5) The resurrection of Jesus

6) The appearances of Jesus

7) The enthronement of Jesus

8) The return of Jesus.

We must begin our telling of the Gospel story with the ETERNAL nature of Christ.

Truth #1: Jesus Christ is PREEXISTENT.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. (John 1:1-2; ESV)

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ (John 1:29-30; ESV)

57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. (John 8:57-59; ESV)

5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. (John 17:5; ESV)

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life . . . (1 John 1:1; ESV)

Truth #2: Jesus Christ is PREEMINENT.

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:15-17; ESV)

18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. (Colossians 1:18-20; ESV)

Truth #3: Jesus Christ is PRESENT.

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20; ESV)

9 And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, “Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, 10 for I am with you . . . (Acts 18:9-10; ESV)

12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. (Revelation 1:12-13; ESV)

We must begin our telling of the Gospel story with the TIMELESS nature of Christ.

FAITH as allegiance.

CONFESSION as articulated allegiance.

BAPTISM as initiated allegiance.

REPENTANCE as transformed/renewed allegiance.

OBEDIENCE as embodied allegiance.

VISION: Engaging the world with God’s love as equipped and empowered followers of Christ.
