8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:8; ESV)
19 We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19; ESV)
As we surrender to love, comparisons DIMINISH.
And I will show you a still more excellent way. 13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. (1 Corinthians 12:31-13:3; ESV)
Attribute #1: Love is PARAMOUNT.
11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers . . . (Ephesians 4:11; NLT)
20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20; ESV)
8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” (Luke 19:8; ESV)
28 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king's command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God. (Daniel 3:28; ESV)
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7; ESV)
Attribute #2: Love is POWERFUL.
14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. (1 Thessalonians 5:14; ESV)
5 Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure. (Psalm 101:5; ESV)
23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. 24 Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. (1 Corinthians 10:23, 24; ESV)
12 Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. (Proverbs 10:12; ESV) . . . 9 Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends. Proverbs 17:9; ESV)
8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8; ESV)
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. (3 John 4; ESV)
8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. (1 Corinthians 13:8-12; ESV)
Attribute #3: Love is PERMANENT.
26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable. (Job 36:26; ESV)
31 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. (2 Samuel 22:31: ESV)
48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48; ESV)
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2; ESV)
9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him . . . (Hebrews 5:9; ESV)
2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2; ESV)
13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13; ESV)
As we surrender to love, comparisons DISAPPEAR.
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40; ESV)
VISION: Engaging the world with God’s love as equipped and empowered followers of Christ.
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God . . . 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us . . . 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. (1 John 4:7, 12, 16; ESV)
