Dark Night of the Soul

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? 2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. (Psalm 22:1-2; ESV)

God PURGES our spirituality through the dark night of the soul.

1 As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. 2 I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him? . . . 9 “O God my rock,” I cry, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief . . . (Psalm 42:1-2, 9; NLT)

Sin #1: God removes spiritual PRIDE.

13 The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate . . . 18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 8:13; 16:18; ESV)

16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. (Romans 12:16; ESV)

Sin #2: God removes spiritual GREED.

25 A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the Lord will be enriched. (Proverbs 28:25; ESV)

39 And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. (Luke 11:39; ESV)

Sin #3: God removes spiritual LUST.

19 They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity. (Ephesians 4:19; NLT)

22 Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. (2 Timothy 2:22; NLT)

11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. (1 Peter 2:11; NASB)

Sin #4: God removes spiritual WRATH.

8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. (Psalm 37:8; ESV)

19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” (Romans 12:19; ESV)

19 You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness. (James 1:19-20; NRSV)

Sin #5: God removes spiritual GLUTTONY.

19 My child, listen and be wise: Keep your heart on the right course. 20 Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons, 21 for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags. (Proverbs 23:19-21; NLT)

18 For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. 19 Their end is destruction; their god is the belly (a slave to their appetites); and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. (Philippians 3:18-19; NRSV)

Sin #6: God removes spiritual ENVY.

30 A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot. (Proverbs 14:30; ESV)

4 Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. (Ecclesiastes 4:4; ESV)

25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5:25-26; ESV)

Sin #7: God removes spiritual SLOTH.

6 Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! . . . 4 Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper. (Proverbs 6:6; 13:4; NLT)

18 Laziness leads to a sagging roof; idleness leads to a leaky house. (Ecclesiastes 10:18; NLT)

26 “But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate, 27 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’ (Matthew 25:26-27; NLT)
